Explore the prototype

PM Flight Simulator offers self-guided rehearsal on iPad for people who make consequential project decisions. You lead a fictional project situation, act on the evidence available at the time, and examine the consequences.

INTERVENE — should I intervene?

You take the role of the owner-side Project Director. The briefing sets out the work, your responsibilities, and the choices available. Daily observations show progress against the plan, investigation updates, and the changing outlook for completion and cost. You bring your professional judgment:

  1. Situation
  2. Evidence
  3. Judgment
  4. Consequence
  5. Reflection

The evidence helps you understand what is known, what is uncertain, and why the outlook has changed. You can work through the rehearsal at your own pace. It is designed for people who know projects; you do not need to be a project-risk specialist to take part.

One activity, consequential choices

INTERVENE is the current Founder rehearsal. One contractor is delivering an electrical duct-bank activity needed for the next milestone. You begin with the contracted day crew and observe the first working day's progress. After Day 1, you can review the night crew using the latest progress and forecast. Keep reviewing the outlook each day, before, during or after an obstruction, or if no obstruction is found.

Weigh continuing with the current crew against ordering an additional night shift paid for by the owner. You can keep the current crew and reassess after the next day's observations. The night shift takes time to mobilize and brings additional cost. Your decision changes how the work proceeds and the uncertainty that remains. One activity keeps these relationships understandable.

A clear debrief — understand this run

The debrief begins with a judgement of your recorded decisions, the reason for that judgement, and a practical lesson. These appear together, before the finish and cost results. Explore the saved evidence to see how the outlook changed, what your intervention changed, and what remained uncertain. Earlier runs with incomplete saved evidence receive a limited judgement.

Reflect on the judgment you made with the information available then. A good outcome does not prove a good decision; a difficult outcome does not, by itself, make the decision wrong.

The next rehearsals — In development

TARGET — In development. A proposed rehearsal of connected activities working toward an intermediate project milestone. The question broadens to where an intervention could help that milestone.

PRIORITIZE — In development. A proposed rehearsal considering several workstreams toward a larger milestone, with decisions about where to direct attention and limited intervention capacity.

Both remain in development. INTERVENE is the rehearsal available in the current Founder Preview.

Why iPad

iPad gives you a focused place to review the situation, follow the evidence, make a decision, and reflect. The project context and observations are provided within the rehearsal.

Access

PM Flight Simulator is currently available on iPad in private, invitation-controlled Founder Preview. INTERVENE is self-guided. Founder-led sessions can also provide a setting for rehearsal and discussion.

The prototype uses illustrative assumptions. Its ability to predict real-project results, improve judgment, or transfer learning to live projects has yet to be established.
